Why ATS rejects resumes — and how to fix it
"Rejected by ATS" usually doesn't mean a robot judged you. More often the parser simply couldn't read your resume properly, so your qualifications never made it into the system. Here are the usual culprits.
1. Multi-column layouts
The single biggest offender. When your resume has side-by-side columns, the parser reads across the page and interleaves the two columns — your job titles end up mixed with your skills list. Fix: switch to one column, top to bottom.
2. Contact details in the header or footer
Many parsers skip the header and footer regions of a document entirely. If your email and phone number live up there, the ATS may record your application with no way to contact you. Fix: put contact details in the main body, near your name.
3. Tables and text boxes
Resumes built on invisible tables or floating text boxes often parse out of order, or not at all. Skill matrices and "proficiency bars" are common examples. Fix: use plain paragraphs and simple bullet lists; write skills as a comma-separated line.
4. Images, icons, and logos
An ATS extracts text — it does not read pictures. A name rendered as a graphic, or contact info shown only as little icons, is invisible to the parser. Fix: keep every important detail as real, selectable text.
5. Unusual or decorative fonts
Highly stylised fonts can map to the wrong underlying characters when text is extracted, turning words into gibberish. Fix: stick to common fonts like Arial, Calibri, Georgia, or Times.
6. Creative section names
If the ATS is looking for "Experience" and your section is titled "My journey so far," it may fail to categorise your work history. Fix: use conventional headings — Experience, Education, Skills, Summary.
7. The wrong file type
Image-only PDFs (a scan of a printed resume) contain no extractable text at all. Some older systems also handle certain formats poorly. Fix: submit a text-based PDF or a DOCX, not a scanned image.
How to check your own resume
